Freshwater ecosystems are heavily stressed by multiple pressures – damming, chemical and organic pollution, etc. – including a mounting pressure by predators (e.g. Great Cormorant) which have further decreased the survival of many EU river fish populations. National management measures of cormorant populations have had limited success as EU Member States could only take measures to improve fish populations status within their borders. A highly migratory species such as the cormorant needs international, co-created management measures to improve biodiversity, boost the ecosystem-services rendered by freshwater ecosystems and prevent societal conflicts.
The ProtectFish project will collect & produce EU-wide scientific data and propose management measures to protect endangered EU-river fish. These measures – with a focus on the Grayling-Cormorant conflict – are developed to be implemented locally for effective EU-wide measures.
